Sunday’s Great Escape

The weather is going to be spectacular this weekend for Sunday’s Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. This is the 32nd edition of the grueling annual race, which includes a 1.5 mile swim, an 18 mile bike ride and an 8 mile run. Need we mention the Bay’s frigid waters and strong currents, as well as the imposing hills competitors face once on land?

2,000 of the world’s best triathletes will compete. If you’re not among them, not to worry, you can still participate. A fitness festival and expo associated with the event takes place both Saturday and Sunday. The event is free, and the festival features 40 vendor booths, a food court and a beer garden. Shop, eat and drink – a triathlon for the rest of us!
